Sophia had to hand it to Gabe: he had the magic touch, even despite the fact he wasn’t well-versed in the baked goods department. The man was picking up on things fast; faster than what she had expected, truth be told.

And if he kept this up, she’d really want to keep him around.

Because, really, was there anything sexier than a good-looking guy that could cook?

“Now we need two-thirds of a cup of milk,” Sophia said over her shoulder.

Gabe whirled around, sifting through her overly stuffed fridge. “Where at?”

“Top shelf, on the far left side. Or at least, that’s where I remember putting it last.”

Bingo. He spied the little half-gallon of low-fat milk and unscrewed the top to take a quick sniff. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and as he turned to hand the carton off, his foot caught the loose tile, sending milk splashing onto the floor.

And onto Sophia’s shirt.

She grimaced as the cold liquid sloshed onto her shirt. “Well, so much for not getting dirty.”

“God, Sophia, I am so sorry.”

“It’s all right. Not the end of the world.” She grimaced again as she uttered the words. If she didn’t wash the thing soon, it would stink to high heaven. “It’s fine. I’ll just grab a fresh shirt.”

Gabe felt like an inch tall as she walked away. Of all the times to mess something up, why now? He wasn’t normally this clumsy. So why was he feeling like a bumbling mess now?

And why the hell hadn’t that stupid tile of hers been fixed?

He shook his head wearily, then continued the task at hand, adding a bit more flour to the mixture. This was a labor of love, all right. And after all the work they’d put into these damn things, they ought to be the best cupcakes he’d ever had.

Then again, with Sophia’s prowess, he had every confidence they would be. The credit was all hers.

He shook the remaining flour into the bowl, then froze as he realized the recipe called for more. Surely, she would have plenty more of it, considering it was a household staple and a must-have for any baker.

He could snoop around. But that would be six kinds of awkward if she caught him, and he didn’t have the first clue where to start his search.

Just go ask about it, he thought. At least, if he had an answer, he could keep moving the ball forward.

Gabe tapped on her bedroom door, which stood slightly ajar. “Hey, do you happen to have any extra flour?”

Sophia walked to the door, clutching a shirt to her bare breasts, and heat flared within him from his head to his toes. Damn. He certainly had not been expecting to see her like this.

But good grief, he was thoroughly enjoying it.

“Second cupboard to the right of the dishwasher. You won’t miss it. It’s a huge bag.”

“Got it.”

Before Sophia could utter another word, Gabe had walked away, leaving her in the dust. Which was a good thing, she supposed. The heat that had been blooming deep within her could at least start to dissipate now that he was gone.
